Use Case: Enforcing the Use of a SharePoint Site Template

A common SharePoint use case: As the administrator, you’ve had some problems with people creating new sub-sites on non-standard site templates, which may generate unnecessary support issues, or inconsistencies across your environment. Using ControlPoint, an administrator can create automated policies to enforce the use of a site template across all scopes of your farm – across specific sites or site collections, across specific web applications, or across your entire farm.

Step 1: On the left side of your screen, navigate to the right level of your SharePoint environment to where you want to apply the policy, and right click on Create ControlPoint Policy.

Step 2: In the Policy Rules drop down, select ‘Control Subsite Creation in Selected Template’ and select the template or templates to be allowed.

As with all ControlPoint automated governance policies, you can then name your policy, add a description, and save to complete the process. This policy ensures that all new sub-sites meet the guidelines and directives of your corporate and SharePoint governance guidelines.

ControlPoint is easy to use and extremely powerful, providing Farm admins, Site Collection admins, and Site admins the ability to create automated governance policies, security trimmed to their level of ownership, to help them better manage SharePoint.
