Use Case: Find SharePoint Sites Not Using the Proper Master Page

A common SharePoint use case: Before you migrate to SharePoint 2010, you want to identify any sites using custom master pages so that you can properly plan and rebuild in your new environment. All sites need to have an updated custom master page in the new 2010 environment, so identifying these sites up front can be very helpful. In fact, identifying where your default master page is not being used is a common query before and after migrations. ControlPoint’s advanced search will quickly find any master page not being used, and can find these across the entire farm.

Step 1: Opening ControlPoint, simply click on the level of your farm to search (the entire farm, or within a specific site collection), and select Advanced Search. Within the search options under System Master, select Not Used, and run the report.

ControlPoint’s advanced search will also help you find where many other customizations exist, such as site templates, web parts, and themes. In the screen shot above, you can also see choices to find sites based on the number of files, size, quota, percent of quota, creation date, modified date, security model, and user having a certain permission applied. The query options to discover customizations or irregularities in your farm are unlimited, and can be very useful as you prepare for your migration.
